재여가 낮잠을 자는 것을 보자 공자께서 말했다. “썩은 나무는 조각할 수 없고, 지저분한 흙으로 쌓은 담은 흙손으로 다듬을 수 없다. 재여 같은 자를 나무라서 무엇 하겠는가!”
또 공자께서 말했다. “전에 내가 사람을 대함에 말을 들고 그의 행실을 믿었지만, 이제는 내가 사람을 대함에 말을 듣고서도 그의 행실을 살피게 되었다. 재여 같은 자로 인해서 사람 대하는 태도를 바꾸게 되었다.”
말주변이 뛰어난 재여가 게으름을 피우자 무섭게 큰 꾸지람을 하는 것이다.
군자는 늘 게으름과 안일에 빠지는 것을 두려워했다. 게으르고 안일하다는 것은 자포자기(自暴自棄)한 것이다.
쉼 없는 수신(修身)과 날이 날마다 새롭게 자신을 향상시키는 게 군자의 본분이다.
말만 잘하고 행동이 뒤따르지 않는 것은 자신과 남을 속이는 것이다. 말과 행동이 같아야 군자다.
주변에 포장된 썩은 나무와 역겨운 냄새 풍기는 자들이 많이들 버티고 있다.
